We all know how important home security is and how important it is to make sure that you take all the necessary steps to protect your home and your family. There is a technical side of home security field. It deals with installing an appropriate security system, alarms, video surveillance, door and window locks and other security equipment. This is definitely a necessary part of your home protection. However, some of the burglars don’t try to break in your house the regular way. There is another type of criminals called bogus callers who will try to trick you to get inside your house and steal your belongings. They can work independently or as a team and they have many ways that they may try to use to deceive you.
The most common way how bogus callers will try to get in your house is by trying to present themselves as agents of some type of maintenance or service company. For example, they may tell you that they are from your local electrical, water of gas company and they are there to install some type of equipment or to fix something that is broken or old. They will usually wear a company uniform and may have instruments or installation equipment with them. Bogus callers try to deceive you and they are trying to look as believable as possible. It is possible that bogus callers found out that you placed an order for something to be installed in your home (furniture, for example) and may use this to get in your house. If you do let them inside, they will try to steal your valuables by distracting you one way or another.
There are several ways to protect you from bogus callers. The first rule is not to let anyone you don’t know inside your house until you are completely sure they are who they say they are. If a person who knocked at your door does not look trustworthy, don’t open the door at all. After the person introduced him or her and said that he or she was sent to do some type of work around your house, make sure to check that person’s identification documents. Every respectful utility or maintenance company issues identification documents to its workers. If you have any doubt, call the company and check to make sure that this is, indeed, one of their workers. Utility companies usually have certain ways to make sure that this is one of their employees. You can ask if this person was sent to your house on a work assignment. Also know that there may be several people claiming to be the representatives of a utility or other type of organization. Be even more careful with a group of people since this is a much riskier situation.
If you do let them in, make sure that there is someone in the room when they perform their work. Never leave someone alone in your house if you don’t know or don’t trust him or her. If someone who is claiming to be a repairman or an agent of a utility company tries to distract you or asks you to go to another room or outside of the building, don’t do that. If you call and ask for some service to be performed in your house in advance, you should make sure that you are not alone during the time of the visit. Ask your friends or family to stay with you at your home during that time.
If you follow all the steps described above you will be more secure: you will protect your home, your family and your valuables. The examples above described a situation when bogus callers are trying to identify themselves as repairmen or representatives of utility companies. However, you should know that bogus callers may try to enter your home under other identities. You should be careful at all times when you are dealing with an unknown person. It is better to spend an extra two or three minutes checking the identity of the unknown person then to become a victim of a bogus caller. All you have to do is to be careful and think about your home security.

I am a part-time private investigator and have been for several years. A great deal of what I do involves surveillance from my vehicle. The cases I generally work involve insurance claims for injuries and infidelity issues.
Concerning the insurance claims, there is rarely a case where I don’t find dirt on someone. I just worked a case where a young man went out with a back injury after 4 days on the job. On the 2nd day of surveillance, I found him skateboarding.
I would like to share 10 surveillance/investigation techniques that I picked up along the way and from other private investigators.
1) Mini-vans are best for surveillance. Get tinted glass so you can sit in the back, virtually unnoticed, most anywhere. I like the older mini-vans, like the Caravans, as they are more nimble and blend in better (they’re everywhere) than newer ones. Once you’ve worked out of a van you’ll never go back to a car.
2) Stay on the vehicle’s bumper when tailing in the city, and allow a car between you as a buffer in slower areas. There are too many stoplights, stop signs and traffic in the city, making it easy lose the tail.
3) Lack of dew on a vehicle during morning hours could indicate it was moved sometime that night.
4) Verify address by looking at the mailbox for a name or peeking at the mail if it’s sticking out.
5) Determine whether residence is a single or multi-family home by counting # of electric meters.
6) While tailing someone, you notice the person stopping i.e. in front of a house- you (as cover) continue past, turn into an empty driveway as if you belong there. Don’t lose sight of person.
7) Take detailed notes via pen & paper or voice recorder. Write date/times, make & plate of any vehicles there, any vehicle movement, anyone showing up, etc. Good notes are crucial for yourself and for the report you give to the client. You, as a private investigator, may be asked to testify so accuracy is critical.
Accurately estimating the height of an individual can be difficult (that’s why those height charts are on doors of convenience stores). You can get a good idea by comparing the individual’s height to that of any vehicle that they get into or out of. This will become easier with practice.
9) When running video, there will be lots of stop starting of the camera - create definite borders between clips by placing hand over camera at the end of each segment. Make sure a time & date stamp appears on tape (setting on camera). Aways obtain a panoramic video shot of location and vehicle for video verification thatthe person was there.
10) Stake-outs can run several hours and occur in non-optimal situations i.e.no convenience store nearby, so keep a roll of toilet paper in your vehicle at all times.
Surveillance involves hours of nothing followed by minutes or even seconds of intense excitement. Make those small parcels of excitement pay off well by following proper investigative techniques.

After an Earthquake you need to do an immediate damage assessment. First go turn off the gas if you smell anything, a leaky gas line could explode and take out your entire home and your cats nine lives. Look for cracks in the slab or any areas where the house carpet is lifted up. Then walk around the exterior of the house, what do you see? Do you see downed fences, retaining walls, support structures holding up the garage at weird angles or any areas where your house was knocked off its foundation? Look also for water pipes which have been broken, if so shut off the main water line coming into the house. If there is extensive damage then that means the other neighbors have also and the entire area.
When entire neighborhoods are damaged and cities you have to worry about chaos and riots, form a group with your neighbors and block off the street with cars if you live in a culd-a-sac. Expect more after shocks. Instruct your family to ration water, fill up your bathtubs with water now incase main water lines to the city have broken. Join in with your neighbors to form a support group and access all damage and get with other neighbors near by and find out what is going on. In the event of power outages, instruct all neighbors to turn off all appliances so it does not spike the system when everything turns back on. If the power is still out after several hours; figure out a plan for food and BBQs and have a street party, but do not waste your food; stick together and ride it out. Also plan what to do incase of huge fires or forced evacuation. Have a care package ready for your entire family for 5-days food and have it easily portable incase you have to pack up the SUV to get out of dodge. The best time to plan home security in the event of an Earthquake is before it happens, so think on this.
