The continued implementation of the Default Retirement Age policy is detrimental to the country’s economy. This is the message being made public by Age UK Charity in its latest report. The report states that forcing older workers to retire led to a loss of nearly £3.5bn in terms of economic output in the past year in UK.

The Conservative and Labour party have both been unable to bring an end to forced retirement, even though all the political parties have vowed to take action against this issue.

Age UK Charity Director Michelle Mitchell said that the policy of Default Retirement is not fair by any means. She says that this an old policy that has no relevance to the modern times. She also stressed that this policy is adversely affecting the economy by leading to a reduction in efficient, skilled labour. The loss of taxes from these newly retired members of the society is also a significant blow to the financials of the country .

When surveyed, nine out of ten older workers were found to be against forced retirement and wanted it to be abolished. The workers believe that the political parties must now take action instead of merely giving reassurances.

Dr Ros Altmann, a governor of the London School of Economics and an independent pensions expert, believes that forced retirement is troublesome for the economy. She points out that forced retirement causes people to have low purchasing power and thus spend less, which invariably affects the economy. She has said that by allowing elderly people who are physically capable and willing to work to continue as part of the workforce these issues can be sorted out.

In 2009, about 120,000 older workers lost their jobs owing to forced retirement. It led to a loss of £3.5bn of economic output, including a loss of £2bn earnings for the workers.

On 6 April 2010, a number of alterations were introduced by the Dept of Work and Pensions aimed at helping women, carers and small wage earners in retirement, only it was not good news for everyone.

One of the most fundamental changes is the enhanced minimum age for getting a pension. From 6th April, the minimum pension age was raised to age fifty five, impacting more than four million people who were born between 6 April 1955 and the 5th April 1960 who will unfortunately have to delay for up to 5 yrs to draw their pension.

The state pension age for women also began to increase from Sixth April until it reaches 65 in 2020. By thousand and twenty six , it is set to rise to 66 for everyone, until it ultimately gets to 68 in twenty forty six.

Additional alterations include a reduction in the Nat.l Ins (NI) contributions required to qualify for the full basic state pension, which increased from £95.25 a wk to £97.65 a wk from the sixth April. Men & adult females will now need to add up just 30 years of contributions, which the government predicts will allow for an additional forty thousand women who get to pension age in the next tax year to qualify for the max state pension.

The state second pension will also be affected by the changes and now payments within the upper earnings threshold have been reduced from 20 per cent to ten %. At some point in the future, this will be moved to a flat rate payment rather than an earnings-related pension, & will proceed to be related to inflation, not salary.
A different credits scheme replaces the Home Responsibilities Protection (HRP) scheme, which is designed to help parents and carers to qualify for the state pension. From the sixth April, valid yrs can now be made up through weekly credits. These can then be added on to any paid contributions made when at work, with no limit on the credits awarded, as long as the qualifying rules are met.

For those reaching basic state pension age after this change takes effect, each complete year of HRP, up to a maximum of 22 years, will be converted into qualifying years for the basic state pension.

The main argument is that they simply don’t generate clicks, which is indeed very bad news for an advertising medium that was originally sold based on click-through rates. But is there something about banner ads that could still be beneficial for a business, even if the ad doesn’t get visitors to click on it? The answer, as it turns out, is yes.

A number of marketing studies and scientific studies that have appeared in publications like the Journal of Consumer Research have shown evidence that banner ads can still help raise brand awareness even if they don’t generate active leads. The idea is that banner ads basically function as Internet billboards. They raise brand awareness by simply exposing Internet users to a company’s name and logo.

Even if the users don’t consciously notice the ad, repeated exposure to the ad will lead to users having positive feelings towards the product or brand being advertised. This happens because people tend to like things that they can recall more easily, i.e. things that seem familiar. If people are continuously exposed to a product’s image or brand name via banner ads, they are more likely to be attracted to the product when they come across it again in a more immediate context (say, while browsing through store shelves or actively searching for relevant products or services).

In other words, a lot of the work of banner ads happens subconsciously. People absorb the image or brand name that the ad is promoting even as their attention is focused on other things, like the content of the site the banner ad is in. Banner ads, even ones that don’t generate clicks, help to foster product familiarity and brand awareness. There is a potential downside to this however.

The same research that shows the positive effects of banner ads on people’s feelings towards a product or company also shows that these positive feelings can disappear if people take the time to more closely inspect the product being advertised, especially if the product turns out to be something other than what they expected. This is something that an online marketing consultant would do well to keep in mind. This type of study into banner ads gives important insight into the way visual stimuli works.

CB Richard Ellis Global Office Rents recently published its survey report on office rent scenario across the world. The report pointed out that London tops the list of most expensive office space markets with the rents of around $183 per square foot in the West End office space, followed by Hong Kong’s Central Business District at about $153 per square foot.

The other toppers in the list prepared by the CBRE survey that charts the developments in the office space markets of 176 cities are Tokyo’s Inner Central, which goes for about $144 per square foot, Mumbai claiming the fourth position with $126 per square foot and Moscow at the fifth place with $125 per square foot.

What is more interesting is that desk space London is almost three times as expensive as the office space market of New York with the most expensive desk space, Midtown Manhattan asking for just over $65 per square foot. The city that had remained in the top ten of the list of most expensive office space markets for several years has been witnessing continuous decline for last three years and has ended up in 26th place this year. The decline has been attributed to the growing office space markets in Latin America, Middle East as well as Far East.

The report also pointed out that the global office rent scenario was quite depressing as the office rents were witnessing continuous fall reaching up to a drop of 4.6% this year. A huge majority of the office spaces under survey have witnessed a decline in the office rents.
