UI Web Design with Purpose

The intent of designing a user interface is to make the information as accessible as possible. A travesty in design can be a great look with poor functionality. If your user cant access your information or products then something is seriously wrong. Another issue lies in whether your user ever returns. An important question to ask is whether they can identify the need to return to your services. It needs to be easy enough that they can achieve instant gratification and desire more when they are done for the day. For example if they stumble upon web design in the Inland Empire are they going to refer you to a friend, or forget about your portfolio before the days end.

The interface is a navigational panel that should be operational by just about anyone that encounters it. Too many options and too much flare may confuse your viewer, but not enough can leave them disinterested. The key to creative web design is combining that creative aspect with a design built for the web. Which of course means it functions as a working tool that provides to both parties.

The skeletal structure of the site counts the most. The remaining design is what completes it, but without the structure of content management the concept collapses.

They Saved Me from Being Grounded

My parents were out of town last week, so I decided that I would throw a party to thank everyone for being so supportive of me. I am the captain of the varsity football team and they do so much for me. After school there is always somebody there to do my work, and take me home. Our party was very successful, but the place was trashed. I didn’t know if i’d ever get that place cleaned, but my friends knew just what to do. They called the California janitorial cleaning service to come and clean. They did an amazing job and my parents never knew it happened.

I am the ceo of a company on the south side of town. I am writing this blog to let people know where to go if you ever have a mess that you need cleaned up. I recently hired some landscapers to come in and do some work. They ended up tracking in dirt from outside all over the main entrance area of my office. I didn’t know what to do. I was so appalled that I fired them on the spot and called the California janitorial cleaning service to come in and clean it up. They did an amazing job and really got me out of a jam.

Taking Stock

Back when I owned an inventory-based business, one of my better customers had a clever barb in his repertoire. If we were out of anything he needed in his order, he would say “You know, this would be a great place to open a supply house.”

But supply, we did for 20 years on my watch. We were in a smaller market, handling about 10,000 separate items, so we enjoyed few economies of scale. We competed with some large distributors and did very well largely due to our focus on inventory control.

At the time we used integrated management software that included an inventory control (IC) module. What made our system work so well was our commitment to keeping accurate inventory on a real-time basis, which necessitated “cycle counting.”

Wikipedia.org defines a cycle count as “an inventory management procedure where a small subset of inventory is counted on any given day.” In our case, this meant that, instead of taking a physical inventory once a year, we counted 2% (one-fiftieth) of our inventory each week up to the fiftieth week of the year. Using this method errors are caught more quickly, and extra counts can be performed on error-prone items.

With that introduction, let’s talk about the steps you can take to get your inventory under control:

1. Evaluate your IC “infrastructure.” Are you ready to automate IC? If you are using a management software package, is the IC module adequate for your needs?

Is your inventory layout conducive to administering a “real-time” IC? Can your staff take on the extra duties involved? While getting such a system going can require a lot of initial attention, IC systems save time, by allowing you to know what’s in stock without having to go to the warehouse, by quickly detecting any possible theft, and by lowering rates of stockout (lost sales) and overstock.

2. Set a target for customer service level. Measures can include percent of orders filled completely, or percent of items delivered to items ordered. The primary constraint on reducing inventory is, of course, customer service level. What’s an acceptable service level for you? 95%? 99.5%? IC software generally uses such a figure to determine how much “safety stock” you need to meet this objective.

3. Learn industry norms to aid perspective. While it should seldom affect your behavior, it is “nice to know” what the industry norms are for businesses of your size. You can probably get these from your trade association, or go to the “Annual Statement Studies” by the Risk Management Association, or “Industry Norms and Key Business Ratios” by Dun & Bradstreet.

What if the industry norms are 90 days of inventory on-hand, and you only keep 45 days worth? What if you keep 120 days worth? No action may be necessary, but this gives you a greater context and perspective as you fine-tune your system.

4. Use “best practices.” Minimum overall inventory is not the end of the story. Ascertain whether a reduction is advisable. Even at a good overall level of stock you may still have many items out of balance, over or under. So our efforts should be about “best practices” that minimize quantities required, while raising the quality of your inventory.

5. Clean house! In my most recent turnaround consulting appointment, a plumbing wholesaler, we started by identifying all the items that our IC system identified as overstock. We went from thinking we needed more warehouse space to having about a third of existing space available.

Of course, much of it went straight to the trash heap, but some was recent enough to send back to the manufacturer. In between, we sold some at two garage sales we held, and donated the rest to a local housing agency.

6. Implement “Just-in-Time. ” JIT includes a set of actions that work together to squeeze slack out of your processes. Do you enter received material as soon as it arrives? Can your key suppliers commit to shorter lead times?

7. Zero-base SKUs. Take a hard look at the realistic contribution of every item in inventory. You may need to keep some losers as “service items,” but you will be amazed at how many of your items are break-even or worse.

8. Partner strategically. Can you narrow your number of suppliers by getting more items from the “majors?” You may currently split up orders to save a penny here and there, but the vendor left standing would probably meet or beat the other’s prices for a greater share of your business. More from each vendor means more frequent replenishment, and more opportunities for JIT.

These are a few actions that should apply to continuous improvement programs at most inventory-based businesses. As they say, “your mileage may vary.”

10 Secrets To Online Success (It’s All About The Customer)

You’ve got your web site online. You’re on top of the search engines. You have killer web site copy. Now all you have to do is wait for the sales to roll in right? Well … not exactly.

In the last five years of working with all types of businesses, the most common mistake companies make is believing that their web site will do all of the work for them. Sure, a web site will definitely help productivity but it can never replace the human element of your business. Potential customers are still looking for some type of bond that brings them into your company, something that still makes them feel important and like an individual - they are looking for real people with real knowledge. And the reason why people choose to buy from you is because of you.

One of the most overlooked aspects of web sites is online customer service and ultimately your email correspondences. Think about it: if a “sales prospect” called your business would you leave them waiting a day or more before replying? Now, unless you work for a bank or just don’t want the business, you would never do that. But as crazy as it sounds, this is what many companies are doing. Sabotaging their own success simply by putting off returning emails to clients.

Here are a few basic rules I personally go by and suggest you adopt:

1. Develop a sorting mechanism in your email program so that you can answer your “sales oriented” emails first and then others later.

2. Answer sales oriented emails in under day if possible (even a simple return email “I am working on it” will suffice in some cases).

3. Answer non-essential emails within 1- 2 days.

4. When you respond to any email, make sure you include at least the following information 1) Your name + your company name, 2) your title, 3) address, 4) telephone (with area code), 5) your return email, 6) your web site and 7) lastly make sure your subject line makes sense!

Also consider the following:

1. The web is now used more than the yellow pages when people are looking to buy a product.

2. It is very probable that your potential customer also contacted your competition.

3. Like your first sales meeting with a prospect, make your email stand out. Tell them what makes you different.

4. Your prospect probably gets SPAM emails on a regular basis..

Make sure that the subject line is not confused with SPAM or your email may never even get read!

5. Make your subject line short and don’t come across as a used sales car person. A simple subject such as: As per your request at ABC.Com is usually sufficient.

6. Do not send files larger than 500k (1/2 a mb) - as a lot of people are still on dial-up.

Following these simple steps will maximize the benefits of your web site. In today’s fast moving economy, the old cliché “you snooze you lose” is more real than ever. And remember the web is no different than any other medium when it comes to building rapport/relationships with your clients. Have fun, stand out from the crowd and you will be surprised by the results.

Pictures and Postcards: priceless possessions

When I was a little younger, I took up photography and have myself exposed to different subjects. I find the art awesome. It captures and preserves moments and things you cherish and adore.

I consider photography as a protective cloth for my valued possessions. Memories that cannot be seized for a long moment and things that will deteriorate in the future time will be detained in your photos. That’s the very reason I liked photography.

Along with my photography penchant, I also developed my love for postcards. Basically it is the same as collecting pictures only that you have a message on it and you mail it. Since then, deltiology has been part of my life.

Deltiology or postcard collecting is currently the third largest collectable hobby in the whole wide world. I am so happy that I am part of that hobby. Doing the same, makes me acquainted with different places and things which are both seen and unseen by me. Credit must be given to Franco-Germans since they are the ones who produced the very first historical card.

The present era is a photochrome postcard milieu. It is also commonly called as ‘modern chromes’. It started in the year 1939 and stays up to the present time. I am influenced by this milieu in the sense that I have learned to incorporate my pictures to come up with customized postcards.

With customization, the creator is given a wider leeway. He can put in his choice of pictures and captions that way the postcards created will appear more personal and warmer than those customarily made.

Since, these postcards are not that ordinary thus, it must be processed through custom postcard printing. A special postcard printing process that acknowledges your postcards special needs. When you have opted custom postcard printing, be sure that you only entrust your printing needs to a credible and reputable commercial printing that way you can be secured of the results. You need not be troubled with discrepancies and other annoying aftermaths.

Nowadays, I do not worry about my priceless possessions. I just enjoy them to the fullest!

Persuading People to Buy - A Simple Technique

Gepost door admin op 02/06/2008

People are not interested in you, your company or your product. They are only interested in the result and benefit they get when they buy from you. Here’s how to keep their interest…

THE ‘I’s’ HAVE IT - BUT THEY SHOULDN’T

The absolute, paramount, crucial point you MUST remember when writing your sales letter, adverts, brochures, web pages or newsletters is to write from your reader’s point of view.

“What’s in it for me?” is the number one question you should be answering for your prospect.

One of the easiest and simplest ways to check if your letter is focused on you, or your reader, is to count the number of ‘I’s in your letter. Count I’s, We, Us, Our. These are all focused on you, your company and your service or product. Then count how often the words ‘You’ and ‘Yours’ appear throughout your letter. If these are very low in number compared to the others - that’s BAD NEWS.

Your prospect’s going to be completely turned off - and there’s a pretty good chance your letter won’t even be read.

We’re used to talking about our products or services; our company; our delivery reputation; our quality control. Apart from concentrating on the wrong person (the writer instead of the reader) this also concentrates on the features you’re offering, not the benefits - it doesn’t explain what the reader can expect to gain.

It’s a difficult style to develop in your letters if you are not used to it. Persevere - it’s worth it. You’ll start to get amazing results when you do.

Write your letter as normal, then go through and edit it, remove all those I’s and turn the message around so YOUR READER IS THE CENTRE OF ATTENTION.

Any message about your product can be turned around and written from your prospect’s point of view, for example:

“Our unique weight-loss programme is designed to reduce your weight by at least 10lbs each month” could be written as…

“In your first month on this unique weight-loss programme you lose at least 10lbs - and continue losing until you reach your ideal weight”

Check the count - make sure the I’s do not have the majority.

(Tip: Use your word-processor’s search facility; search for ‘I’ ‘we’ ‘our’ and ‘my’ and then rewrite the sentence or paragraph).
