Botulinum medicine (shortened to Botox) is swiftly becoming popular in Sydney society in fact it is fast becoming an essential part of any beauty routine for people in the Harbour City.
But I never fail to be dumbfounded by the amount of half-truths which have developed about the treatment.
Here are some of the more myths that we come across daily in Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I practise as a doctor.
Delusion Number 1: The muscles in my forehead might stiffen up!
Below the skin of the face are sixty or so muscles. These muscles normally work in harmony, but from persistent movement lines can appear. Too great a dose of Botox can lead to the forehead looking a little less taut. By and large physicians use relatively minute doses to make you look well rested, nevertheless you will maintain your facial expression.
Thus a carefully calculated dosage of Botox in the right place means one should have a smoothing of any fine lines and wrinkles without compromising facial expression.
Delusion Number 2: Botox is poisonous!
Actually there is a little truth in this. Its pharmaceutical name is Botulinum Toxin Type A. In very large amounts it can result in loss of muscle tone and can cause sickness.
But to maintain some perspective: a well known pharmacist’s expression is that ‘everything is poisonous - all depending on the dose’. All drugs will make someone really ill in big enough amounts. If you drink too much water you will die.
Delusion Number 3: Botox is painful!
Your hairs are thicker than the hypodermic needles we have at Star Cosmetic Medicine. A lot of patients say that the treatments aren’t as painful as being bitten by a bug. For Certain not as bad as getting a vaccination.
Delusion Number 4: My face will be numb!
This is completely untrue. Botox acts on the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, not the nerves of sensation. Botox just affects the ability to relax muscles.
Delusion Number 5. You must keep getting Botox or you will develop even worse fine lines and wrinkles than ever!
This is also wrong.

B.tox is expected to last for up to three months. Any treatments after the first visit usually last a few weeks longer. The lines will slowly re-emerge as the muscle returns to normal. However they will certainly not be any deeper than before.
In fact the wrinkles will generally be softer than if you had never had Botox treatment - even if you never persevere with the therapy. Primarily due to the fact that your facial muscles and skin have had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the treatment.
