Steve Smith, founder of Coda Research Consultancy, a technology research firm, has recently said that significant increase in mobile broadband usage could mean losses for providers in case they prove to be inefficient in operations. Coda Research statistics predict a forty-fold increase in mobile internet users by the year 2017. The number of such users will increase by 418 million and the total monthly data usage will increase to 1.8 exabytes in the next eight years.

Smith however added that while this increase is good for the prospects of the telecom industry, it could lead to heavy losses for service providers as well as vendors of hardware and software components, if efficiency-increasing measures are not taken immediately. He categorically stated that any increase in data usage would bring with it a whole lot of risks. Operators will have to ensure that they keep margins at optimum levels by providing efficient services to their customers while increasing their businesses. .

Europe is likely to have the least growth of broadband users while Asia Pacific will see the highest increase by 2017. The number of users in Africa and the Middle East are predicted to be around 48 million, while Europe and America will have about 94 million and 58 million users respectively. Coda Research also predicted that some countries might totally give 3G technology a miss and go for LTE, which is the next big leap in mobile broadband innovation. General production for LTE is scheduled to begin in 2012, after which researchers feel this technology will be widely accepted.
