I go to the Caribbean, to Jamaica, one of the region’s most visited tourist destinations, to have fun on the beach underwater, not to lie on day bed by some pool and sip a rum cocktail. I can do that in Miami, why go all the way to Jamaica? For me the Caribbean is all about water sports like scuba diving, snorkeling, snuba, and fishing, perhaps a bit of windsurfing too. For a rollicking time with a bunch of friends, nothing beats a banana boat ride ! Jet skis and Hobie cats are cool too, but if the underwater world fascinates you, then the Caribbean’s most visited tourist destination has some remarkable diving sites that I have seen..
Jamaica hides her best tourist attraction under the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. Adventure seeking divers enjoy the diverse diving and snorkeling sites around the island. Jamaica;s most visited tourist destinations, Negril, Ochos Rios and Montego Bay offer opportunities for scuba diving and snorkeling. Divers take the plunge to see beautiful corals, sponges, turtles that come to nest on these shores and a veritable rainbow of colors among the fish of different shapes and sizes.
Negril is the most-visited tourist destination for diving in Jamaica. This charming little town has several underwater caves that can be explored. Guided tours will take you to a 40ft cavern filled with yellow sponges called the Throne Room, just at a depth of 65 feet. .The red sponges in the Arch make for a colorful photo of your diving trip.To feel that thrill down your spine, try the dive at Shark Reef, where you may encounter nursing sharks. Eels don’t appear to be too slippery, they are easily spotted at Rock Cliff Reef
In Montego Bay, we went to the Montego Bay Marine Park, which includes the town’s best diving sites. I quite enjoyed the climb up the 10 foot chimney-like passage that led up to 35 ft below sea level from the Widowmaker’s Cave. which is around 80 feet below.
Runaway Bay, Spanish Anchor, Shipwreck Reef , Ricky’s Reef and Canyon are some other interesting diving sites in Jamaica. Do you know that they actually sunk a ship deliberately to create a habitat for the coral and fish in Ochos Rios. The dive at this site is a unique experience that is not to be missed.
