We gardeners spend hours yanking weeds out of our precious
flowerbeds. To be honest, I enjoy weeding. I find it relaxing.
I suspect quite a few of my fellow gardeners would agree.
Recently I discovered an annoying weed I haven’t been able
to defeat is in truth a sheer delight. I speak of the humble
Pineapple Weed.
Matricaria matricioides! A big name for a weed found in waste
areas. But its scientific name is actually touching once
defined.
‘Matricaria’ stems from the Latin matrix meaning ‘mother’
while ‘caria’ is Latin for ‘dear’. This gives us ‘mother dear’.
This name refers to the medicinal use of pineapple weed for
easing the pain of the menstrual cycle, as well as for treating
colic in babies.
Pineapple weed can soothe the pain of being a woman, a mother, or
a baby (which helps Mom even more).
This plant’s green fern-like foliage and oval greenish yellow
flowers often cause people to mistake it for its close relative
the chamomile plant. Pineapple weed looks like chamomile while
in bud, only this weed’s homely flowers never produce the flashy
white petals of its famous cousin.
Visit this link to see a photo:
http://www.wssa.net/photo&info/bmp/pineapple.weed.plant.jpg
This native annual of Western America makes its stubborn presence
known from May to November. It grows in cracks in sidewalks,
parking lots, in any plot of dry earth trampled by we humans. The
pineapple weed has spread clear across the Atlantic to Europe.
I discovered the hidden charm of this weed while pulling a group
out of the ground. The crushed leaves actually give off the
fruity scent of pineapple.
Intrigued, I did some research. I learned this weed is not only
edible, with the same soothing qualities as chamomile, but was
also a big hit with the Native Americans way back when.
Native Americans traded goods for pineapple weed. The plant was
used as a perfume as well as a big repellant. Dried plants were
sprinkled onto meat to keep off flies.
But what caught my attention while researching is the fact this
weed is often brewed as a tea.
Being a devout tea-drinker this delighted me. I already make tea
from my peppermint plants. Why not put this pesky weed to good
use?
After rinsing three dusty plants in the sink I brewed a pot of
pineapple weed tea by pouring freshly boiled water into a tea
strainer holding flower heads from the plants (the leaves can
also be used but they add a bitter note to the brew). I allowed
the tea to steep for three minutes before removing the strainer
from the pot.
The result was nothing short of wonderful! The delicately
fragrant tea tasted like gentle chamomile with honey. A young
friend described the tea as tasting like a ‘yummy dessert in a
cup’.
I no longer buy chamomile tea at the grocery store. Instead
I harvest my pineapple weed from a proper garden bed. I allow a
few flower heads to develop into seed heads, which I collect for
future planting.
(Sidebar: Why did I buy chamomile tea instead of grow the herb?
I’m asking myself this question. Think of the money I could have
saved! Oh, my lord. I’m an idiot.)
With good care the pineapple weed becomes a handsome soul a
foot tall with attractive ferny foliage. Collect the brown seed
heads from wild plants if you wish to grow it. Grow it as you
would chamomile.
Pineapple weed can also be used as an accent plant with other
more traditional garden plants. The chartreuse color of the
flower heads glow when mixed in with blue-flowering plants.
But be careful! We are talking about a weed, and we all know
how easily weeds spread. Collect the seed heads before they
turn completely brown, or you’ll wind up drowning in tea.
Visitors to my garden often point out my pineapple weed bed
and tell me I need to weed. I inform them I grow the weeds
on purpose. My visitors look at me as if I’m crazy. Weeds are
pests! Has she finally lost her mind?
I explain my reason (it happens so often that explaining is
growing tiresome). My visitors wind up sniffing the plants and
peppering me with questions.
So, the next time you’re on your knees in your garden about to
yank out another weed stop yourself and take a good look at
the plant.
You may have found a Cinderella in disguise.
Disclaimer: The results I achieved with this plant are solely my
own. I am not responsible for any adverse effects you may
experience as a result of consuming the Pineapple Weed. Please do
not consume any wild plant until you are sure of its
identification and any dangers it may pose. If you suffer from
plant allergies then please check with your doctor first.

There is nothing quite as relaxing as a leisurely evening soak in the hot tub after a long, hard day’s work. Sore muscles can finally relax as the water jets massage aches and pains away. It is no wonder that hot tubs are so popular. However, how do you decide which of the many outdoor hot tubs is right for you?
First, think about who will be using your new hot tub. If you and your spouse plan to spend quiet evenings soaking and relaxing, you will want a smaller hot tub than four friends who are sharing a small bungalow and plan to use their hot tub for entertaining. If a disabled person or an elderly person will be using the hot tub, look for handicap accessible features.
Next, consider whether you want to just soak quietly or whether you want the hot tub to really massage aching muscles. If you want to avoid having to scrunch down to have the jets reach your back, you will want to look for a tub with plenty of jets and a more powerful motor. You may also want to consider features such as an underwater light, a storm seat, and even a built in CD player. For those people who are attached to their television sets, there is even a model with a built in TV/DVD player combination.
Once you have decided on the features you need, you will want to consider the available area for your hot tub. If you have limited space, you may want to purchase a square or round tub, but if there is plenty of room for your hot tub, you may want to choose a rectangular tub.
Although most hot tub inserts are a bit unattractive, you can encase them in almost any type of material. Many hot tub owners choose red wood or decking to encase their hot tubs, while others prefer simulated wood products. These platforms often offer much needed storage for hot tub accessories. You can choose additional features for the surround, such as a deck area or built in planters.
Finally, don’t forget to consider safety. You should have a licensed electrician and plumber complete the hot tub installation if you do not have it installed by the manufacturer. If your hot tub does not come with a cover, you may want to consider purchasing one since the cover will help you keep out debris. In addition, you may want to look into a lock for the cover, so that you can keep children out of the hot tub.

Most sewing machines are well-built and will last for many years with only a few parts needing replacement. A great number of antique sewing machines are still in operation, but parts can be hard to find if the company is no longer in business. Typically, the manufacturer is the best location for sewing machine parts, but there are also many companies now specializing in replacement parts for sewing machines.
Sewing machines are made up of many mechanical and electrical parts, the most of which only need regular care while others will need frequent replacement. The parts that wear out more frequently are light bulbs, belts and the needles. These items are usually easily replaced and found at local retailers. Replacement parts can be sold as original manufacturer items or universal parts made to fit a variety of machines.
Some sewing machine parts such as the needle plates, bobbins and feet attachments may have to be purchased from a dealer or a sewing machine repair shop. In order to determine the correct part, the dealer will need to know the manufacturer of the sewing Machine, the specific model name or number and the part number.
In addition to replacement parts, it’s possible to purchase after-market sewing machine parts. Typically, a new sewing machine will come with basic accessories such as the pressure foot and a zipper foot. If a sewing job requires a ruffle or quilting attachment, the retailer or parts supplier would have those items as well. Sewing machine parts from a specific supplier may sometimes be limited to a specific brand.
Suppliers of a particular brand of sewing machine will typically offer parts for all models or types of machines made by that manufacturer. Dedicated suppliers or repair shops frequently offer to maintain the sewing machine with recommended tune-ups.
Sewing Machines Info provides detailed information about industrial, embroidery, antique sewing machines, and sewing machines parts, as well as reviews of best sewing machine manufacturers. Sewing Machines Info is the sister site of Vending Machines Web.

“Isn’t that beautiful corn in those people’s front yard?” I asked.
“I will not have corn growing in my front yard,” said my husband.
“Corn is a handsome plant. It gives a lush, tropical air.”
“I will not have corn growing in my front yard.”
So we didn’t have corn the next year. Our back yard was shaded, except for one part, and I had decided to grow roses there instead of corn.
The year after that I returned to the argument: “What if we planted corn in the side yard? It gets lots of sun.”
“I will not have corn in my front yard.”
“This wouldn’t be the front yard. It would be the side yard. And you remember how delicious corn tastes when you pick it five minutes before you cook it?”
He thought about how delicious corn tastes. “I guess the side yard isn’t the front yard,” he said. “Okay. You can grow corn in the side yard.”
“And I’ll plant a hedge out front so people can’t see the corn as they drive by.”
“That’s even better.”
So I began to plan a hedge.
We had many children in our Virginia neighborhood. Why not plant a hedge they could enjoy?
In the corner next to our neighbor’s property, I began the hedge with a serviceberry bush (an Amelanchier). Serviceberry bushes and trees vary in size. Mine ended up about eight feet tall, with feathery white blossoms in spring and brilliant orange leaves in fall. In summer it produced tiny black berries with one drawback: between the birds and the children, they zipped off that bush. I got exactly two berries one year and none thereafter. I can state, on the basis of those two berries, that they taste a good deal like huckleberries. They are good.
At the other end of the hedge, in a strip facing the driveway, I planted black raspberries — which felt so peppy they hardly knew what to do with themselves. I didn’t know they needed to be tied to supports, and they stuck ten-foot stalks in all directions. They looked awful. They tasted fantastic.
When the black raspberries got ripe, neighborhood grownups and children gathered to gobble down undisciplined berries warm with the sun and eye each other and laugh for sheer happiness.
As a hedge, they were a mistake. As a treat, they were fabulous.
The main hedge facing the street was a row of Nanking cherry bushes about eight feet high. In early spring they were covered with tiny pearl-like buds and white blooms. In summer they glistened with red cherries within lush green growth. The cherries tasted like a cross between pie cherries and sweet cherries. They were good.
One summer day I looked out the window and saw a little boy coming down the street. I didn’t recognize him, but he apparently recognized ripe cherries when he saw them. He stopped and stared at the bushes, then moved in closer. I was about to go to the door and tell him to take all the cherries he wanted, but then I realized he was trying a new maneuver. He turned around facing the street and began to back up to the bushes. Aha! I thought. That kid’s had some education that didn’t come from books.
His technique was pretty good. He looked blandly into the distance as the branches behind him jiggled up and down. When his hands were filled with cherries, he started off running. And I ran too — to the door. I meant to call out, “Little boy! Little boy! Come back.” But then I realized that would just make him run faster.
I wanted to say, “You can eat my cherries all afternoon, if you like.” But by that time, in a splendid burst of speed, he had rounded the corner and was out of sight.
You can come back any time, little boy.

(ARA) - Coming up with gift ideas for kids is easy. They’re always appreciative of toys;but what do you get for your parents’ anniversary, birthday, or just to let them know you appreciate them?
David and Charlotte Penn of Crystal, Minn., think they’ve come up with a great gift for Charlotte’s dad. They found an old photograph of the farm Kurt Ross grew up on in Bellingham, Minn., near the South Dakota border, and plan to have it made into a mural. “Charlotte’s parents are in the process of redecorating their basement right now and we know just where it can go,” says Penn. The print, which will be 8 feet tall and 10 feet wide, will hang on the wall along the steps leading downstairs.
Murals used to only appear in public places or business offices; but now that the cost of making them is coming down, they are becoming more prevalent in home decorating. “We recently acquired some new technology that allows us to turn negatives, slides or prints into wall sized images in a very cost effective manner. We can produce murals as small as 4 x 6 feet or as big as a building. Whatever the customer wants, we can make happen,” says Todd Imholte, president of Murals My Way, a new subsidiary of Environmental Graphics in Minnesota.
When the Penns first decided to buy a mural as a gift, they weren’t planning to have a custom one made. “As I was browsing the images on the company’s Web site, I came across one that looked just like my father-in-law’s place. We decided it would be worth it to pay a little more to get something custom made,” says Penn. Custom murals cost about $9 per square foot, so the Penns will pay about $700 for their 8 foot by 10 foot mural.
“If you want to save a little money, you can choose an image from our photo library,” says Imholte. The company has more than a thousand licensed images from world-renowned artists and photographers. They are made-to-order and printed on high-quality wallpaper stock. If you choose an image from the photo gallery, it’ll cost you about $8 per square foot to have made.
There are also 25 different images available in pre-printed murals measuring 13 by 8 feet that sell for less than $150. Paste and instructions are included with each mural.
Depending on your comfort level with hanging wallpaper, you can either choose to hang your mural yourself or hire a professional. A list of members from the National Guild of Professional Paperhangers can be found at www.muralsmyway or by calling (888) 295-9764.

Do you know what the Child Trust Fund is? a low number of parents seem to realise that all babies get a free £250 voucher from the State to place in a Child Trust Fund. This voucher can be invested in any one of three kinds of CTF account, Stakeholder - a shares-based account thatswitches into cash, a savings account or a shares account. It is an excellent way to save for the future requirements of a young person
Scottish Friendly is a licensed provider of the Child Trust Fund The State is eager for the public to have access to Stakeholder accounts and this is the type of account that we are catering for. This means that:
Investments are paid into Scottish Friendly’s Managed Growth Fund, which hopes to provide good growth potential
An investment is made partly in shares to get the benefit of potentially higher returns over 18 years, compared to a cash deposit account (although the value of shares can
fall as well as go up whereas capital would be protected in a deposit account)
It comes with a low ‘Stakeholder’ funds charge of only 1.5 percent yearly
At age 18 the child will get a lump sum, entirely free of Capital Gains and Income Tax under current legislation
It’s affordable - extra payments can be placed in the account from only £10
One of the great attractions of the Child Trust Fund is that anyone - parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends - if they want can give to the Fund to a ceiling of £1,200 per year to help increase the child’s Fund (once added, this money is not allowed to be withdrawn).
What this means is that our Stakeholder account offers a good balance between potentially high returns and a reduced level of risk. There’s also the additional assurance that our account is in accordance with with the Government’s stakeholder criteria. However this does not mean that returns are assured or that Stakeholder accounts are suitable for everyone. Remember that the value of shares in the Managed Growth Fund (where your Child Trust Fund money is held) can fall as well as increase and would not be guaranteed.
Only infants whose birthday is on or after 1st September 2002 are eligible to start up a Child Trust Fund. If you have older children born before the above-mentioned date who are not entitled you could consider saving for them with a Child Bond - it’s a tax-free savings plan intended for long-term growth.
There can be no doubt that investing for your daughter is a rewarding means of preparing for tomorrow.

“Mommy, come see! There are fairies in the garden!”
And so they might have been to the eyes of a five year old who grew up on tales of pixies, elves and fairies. The magical visitor this time, though, was a ruby-throated hummingbird. Hummingbirds have a unique ability to hover in one place by rapidly fluttering their tiny wings which may truly have made them the ‘fairies’ that many people saw hovering around brightly colored flowers.
It’s not difficult to create a garden that will attract hummingbirds, but if you’d like to build a habitat in which they will happily nest and live throughout the northern summer, you need to provide them with more than a sugar-water feeder and a plant or two. An active hummingbird garden doesn’t need to be large, but it will have all of the following key ingredients to attract and keep the attention of nature’s fairies.
Choose nectar producing plants that bloom at different times throughout the spring, summer and autumn.
Flowers are, of course, the key ingredient in attracting hummingbirds to your garden. The tiny birds feed on nectar that is produced by flowers, and seem particularly attracted to plants with trumpet or tubular bright red and orange flowers. Among their particular favorites, though, are rhododendrons, azaleas and rose of Sharon bushes, so the red trumpet isn’t a hard and fast rule. For northern gardens that attract the ruby-throated hummingbird, choose from the list of plants below, making sure that you choose plants that flower at different times during the blooming season to provide food for them throughout the spring, summer and fall.
Spring Bloomers
Azaleas, rhododendrons and rose of Sharon bushes make a great ‘background’ for hummingbird gardens. They bloom early in the spring and continue blooming through the early summer. Pink and bright red varieties are favored, but hummingbirds love ALL rose of Sharon varieties.
Summer Bloomers
Bleeding hearts and red mountain columbine bloom in the early summer, as do petunias, morning glories, trumpet vines, trumpet honeysuckle, and impatiens, all of which attract hummingbirds. An expanse of shade-dappled impatiens is a powerful attraction for hummingbirds, who are ’sight’ hunters, finding their feeding grounds by sight.
Autumn Bloomers
Butterfly bush, day lilies, garden phlox, bee-balm and impatiens all will keep hummingbirds returning through the autumn and attract late migrators.
Provide a source of water in the hummingbird garden.
Unlike larger birds, hummingbirds will seldom take advantage of a bird bath or bowl of water. Instead, they relish cool mists. A garden hose with a misting attachment or a small fountain that can be adjusted to a fine mist will keep them happy.
Create vertical space for hummingbirds to perch and nest in your garden.
Hummingbirds need shelter from predators and small branches for perching and resting (yes, yes, they do perch sometimes!). By choosing a few taller bushes or trees, you can provide both.
A few strategically placed hummingbird feeders will offer an easy treat in your hummingbird garden.
There are dozens of commercially designed hummingbird feeders designed to be attractive to the little wanderers. Choose feeders with bright red accents, and a capacity for about 8 ounces of sugar water. Rather than using one large feeder, place 2-4 of them around your garden, out of sight of each other if possible. Hummingbirds are notoriously territorial. By providing several ‘private’ feeding stations, you’ll increase the number of hummingbirds that you attract.
